DocumentationSync and teams
Teams and roles
A team is several people in the same workspaces — the same profiles, connections and saved accounts. Each of them sees the folders given to them and does what their role and permissions allow.
How a team works
Everything in Liminal belongs to a team. Your account comes with one — your own team, which carries your plan and is never deleted or handed over. On the Team plan you buy seats in it and invite people.
- A seat is a person. A member takes a seat, and so does an invitation that has not been answered yet. The plan is sold from 2 to 100 seats.
- Everything in a team is shared. What a member creates there belongs to the team and stays in it when they leave. What is yours alone stays in your own team.
- A teammate gets a working session, not a file of credentials. A profile opens signed in from its saved account, so nobody has to send passwords or cookie files around. A profile’s browsing data stays on the computer of whoever used it.
The Team page
The team is managed on the Team page — the item under Templates in the sidebar; Settings has no team section any more. The page belongs to the team picked in the switcher at the top of the sidebar.
- The header
- The team’s name, its plan and the day it runs until, the seats taken out of those paid for, and Add Seats…, which opens the payment on the site.
- The table
- Members and unanswered invitations, with their role, access, permissions and the day they joined. The owner comes first, your own row says so, and an invitation shows Invited and the day it ends.
- The panel
- The selected member’s role, the folders they see and their permissions; for an invitation — who sent it, until when, Send Again and Revoke….
On Free and Pro the page says what the Team plan gives and offers Get Team…. A Member and a Viewer see it read-only: their own role, access and permissions, and Leave Team….
Invite people
- On the Team page press Invite….
- Type the person’s address and choose a role — Admin, Member or Viewer. Member is chosen by default; only the Owner invites an Admin.
- Press Send Invite. They get a letter with a link that works for 72 hours; the seat is held until they answer.
- Someone without a Liminal account signs up from the link; it works in place of an invite code.
- Someone who already has an account sees the invitation in the app’s window, with Accept, and in the menu of the switcher — there is no need to open the settings. It can be answered on the site as well.
- An invitation is for one address. Send Again gives it a new term and a new link, and the old link stops working; Revoke… frees the seat.
Note. No free seat, no invitation: the page says that every seat is taken and offers Add Seats… — see Payment.

- A team has one Owner. Only the Owner makes someone an Admin or changes an Admin.
- An invitation can be for Admin, Member or Viewer. Ownership is not given by invitation — it is handed over.
- A Viewer sees what is given to them and changes nothing — in the window and through the Local API alike.
Access by folder
The Owner and Admins see every profile of the team. For a Member and a Viewer, Can see in the member’s panel is either All profiles or Selected folders — whole workspaces or single folders; No Folder stands for the profiles outside any folder.
- A member with selected folders sees nothing else anywhere: not in the list, the search, Move To or the counters, and a workspace with nothing given to them is not in the switcher.
- A new profile of theirs goes into a folder given to them. With no folder at all, they see why and cannot create profiles.
- A profile from a given folder opens with its own connection and saved account, even when the rest of the connections are not visible to them. The proxy password is not shown.
- Access taken away applies at once: the folder’s profiles leave their list, and a profile they have open closes with its data saved.
Note. A folder can take profiles from everyone: Accept Profiles from Everyone in its menu. A member who does not see it finds it in Move To under Hand Over To and puts a profile there without seeing what is inside — this is how a warmed-up profile is passed on.
Permissions on top of the role
A role gives a set of permissions to start with. The Owner and Admins change them for each member, one by one, in the Permissions block of the panel; a changed one is marked Changed, and Reset to Role brings the role’s set back. A change of role does the same.
| Group | Permissions |
|---|---|
| Profiles | Create · Edit settings · Delete · Clone · Change fingerprint · Export cookies and profiles · Share with other accounts · Transfer to other accounts |
| Connections | Add · Edit · Delete |
| Organization | Manage tags · Manage folders · Manage workspaces |
- An action without its permission is turned off wherever it is — the toolbar, the menus, the panel, the keyboard — and says why: «No permission: delete profiles. Ask the team owner.» A request through the Local API is refused the same way.
- An action on many profiles skips the ones it has no permission for and says how many it skipped.
- Sharing and handing over are on for an Admin and off for a Member until the Owner turns them on. The Owner’s permissions cannot be limited.
Who is in a profile
A profile is open in one place at a time. While a teammate has it open, the others see a lock and their address in the list, and the profile’s panel says who opened it, since when and on which computer. It cannot be opened a second time — not by a button, a double click or the Local API.
- Release…
- For the Owner and Admins: after a confirmation the profile closes on the other computer with its data saved, and anyone with access can open it.
- Ask to Close
- For everyone else: the person who has the profile open is asked to close it, and decides.
- By itself
- If the app that holds the profile crashed or lost the network, the profile frees itself in about 90 seconds.
A profile open on your other computer shows the same lock, and you can release it yourself. Opening many profiles at once skips the busy ones and says how many.
Several teams
You can belong to other people’s teams besides your own, and make more teams of your own. With more than one team the switcher at the top of the sidebar names the team and the workspace, and its menu lists your teams.
- Picking another team moves the whole window into it: profiles, connections, accounts, templates and the Team page. Profiles running in the current team close — the app asks first and says how many.
- New Team… makes one more team of your own; that takes a paid plan. Each such team has its own Team plan: until it is paid, only its Team page works, with Continue on the Site… and Delete Team….
- A team whose plan ended keeps working for 3 days, then closes: its members, profiles and settings are kept, and it opens again once paid.
Manage members and the team
- Change a role
- In the member’s panel. The Owner changes anyone’s but their own; an Admin changes a Member’s or a Viewer’s and does not make an Admin. The new role applies on the member’s computer at once.
- Remove from Team…
- Their seat is free again, the team’s profiles open on their computers close, and what they created stays in the team.
- Leave Team…
- You leave someone else’s team, and the window moves to your own. The Owner does not leave — they hand the team over or delete it.
- Rename Team…
- For the Owner and Admins; everyone sees the new name at once.
- Transfer Ownership…, Delete Team…
- Only for a team made besides your first one: ownership goes to one of its Admins and you become an Admin; deleting asks for the team’s name and removes it for everyone. Your own first team is never handed over or deleted.
All of it can be done on the site as well, in your account under Teams.
Hand a profile over
A profile can be given to another account for good — sold warmed up, or handed to a client. Transfer… is in the menu of a closed profile.
- Type the address of the account it goes to and choose what goes with it: the saved account, on by default, and the connection, off by default — a built-in one never goes. The fingerprint and the settings always go; the tags and the folder stay with you.
- Confirm. The profile shows as Transferring: while the offer stands — 7 days — it is not opened or changed. Cancel Transfer takes it back.
- The other side sees the offer in the window and in Shared with Me, presses Accept… and picks a workspace and a folder — or presses Decline.
- Accepted, it is not undone: the profile is theirs and opens on their computer with the same fingerprint and, if the account went with it, signed in. Its browsing data on your computer is deleted, and the people it was shared with lose access.
- Taking a profile needs Pro or Team. A declined, cancelled or expired offer leaves the profile with you as it was.
