Built-in proxies

On Pro and Team you can work without buying proxies anywhere: Liminal has its own, and gives one to each new profile.

What they are

A built-in proxy is a connection Liminal provides and looks after. On the Connections page its Source is Managed. Its address and credentials are not yours to edit, and it cannot be deleted by hand.

Built-in proxies are part of the paid plans. On Free the app says so wherever they would appear, and a profile runs on your own proxy or on a direct connection.

One for every new profile

With Automatic proxies on in Settings › Connections — it is on by default — a new profile receives a built-in proxy when it is created. A profile waiting for its proxy does not open on a direct connection in the meantime.

  • A template can ask for the same with Automatic built-in proxy, or name one of your own connections instead.
  • In Create Multiple Profiles… the choice is Built-in — one per profile.
  • To use your own proxy for a profile, simply choose it in Proxy or VPN.

Limits

A plan includes a number of built-in proxies and an amount of traffic through them per person per calendar month; Team has more of both than Pro. The current figures are on the pricing page, and your own usage is in Settings › Account under Built-in proxies.

  • When every built-in proxy of the plan is taken, Create Multiple Profiles… does not create the profiles that ask for one and says the limit was reached. A single new profile is still created, but it has no proxy and does not open until one can be given to it — put it on your own proxy or on a direct connection instead.
  • The traffic is counted per calendar month. A built-in proxy that has none left stops working; profiles on your own connections are not affected.

When a built-in proxy stops answering

If a built-in proxy dies while a profile is running, Liminal replaces it with another one and reloads the tab — a few times per session at most. It never switches the profile to your own network to keep the page alive.

With your own proxies there is no replacement: the page shows the browser’s proxy error until the proxy answers again or you assign another.

Location

A built-in proxy has a country like any other, and the profile’s language and time zone follow it — see How the fingerprint works. Check what a site sees with Check for Leaks.
