Key concepts

Liminal has a small vocabulary. These are the words on the screen and what stands behind each of them.

Profile

A profile is a separate browser. It has its own cookies, storage, cache, history, extensions and bookmarks, and nothing of it is visible from another profile. To a site, each profile looks like a different person on a different device.

Three things make that true: the profile’s fingerprint, its connection and its isolated data. A profile is cheap — create as many as you need, on every plan. See Create and open profiles.

Fingerprint

A fingerprint is everything a site can read about the device: the system and browser version, the screen, the graphics card, fonts, time zone, languages and more. Liminal generates one for every profile so that its parts agree with one another, and the profile keeps it from one session to the next.

See How the fingerprint works.

Connection

A connection is the route a profile’s traffic takes: a proxy or a VPN configuration. They are kept on the Connections page and assigned to profiles; a profile with no connection uses Direct Connection — your own network.

See Proxies, VPN and Leak check and protection.

Saved account

A saved account is a card for a login you work with on some site: its name, its credentials and, if you have them, its cookies. A card is attached to a profile, so the profile opens already signed in. Do not confuse it with your Liminal account — the one you sign in to the app with.

See Saved accounts and Cookies.

Workspace, folder and tag

Workspace
The largest container. A workspace holds its own profiles, connections, saved accounts, folders and tags, and you work in one workspace at a time.
Folder
A group of profiles inside a workspace, shown as a branch in the sidebar.
Tag
A colored label. A profile can carry several, and the list can be filtered by them.

See Workspaces, folders and tags.

Template

A template is a recipe for new profiles: the system to imitate, the language, the connection, the pages to open, the folder and the tags. Changing a template affects only the profiles created after the change. See Templates.

Team

Everything you create belongs to a team. Alone, you work in your personal team; on the Team plan you invite people into it, and each of them gets a role — Owner, Admin, Member or Viewer — that decides what they may change. See Teams and roles.

The window

Liminal is one window. Its parts are named the same way throughout this documentation:

Sidebar
On the left: the workspace picker, the sections Profiles, Connections, Accounts and Templates, the tree of folders and profiles, and at the foot your account with its menu.
Toolbar
Above the main area: the page’s title, the button that creates something on this page, the page’s actions, Filters, search, and the switch of the Profile Settings panel.
Main area
A table — of profiles, connections, accounts or templates — or the browser of the open profile.
Profile Settings
The panel on the right with everything about the selected profile.

On your computer and in the cloud

What a profile’s browser holds — history, saved passwords, open tabs, site data, extensions — stays on the computer it was created on, on every plan. The catalog — the list of profiles with their fingerprint settings, connections, saved accounts and app settings — can be kept in the cloud on the paid plans, so it appears on every computer you sign in on. See Cloud sync and Where your data lives.
