The browser in the window
An open profile is a real Chromium browser drawn inside the Liminal window. You do not juggle a window per profile: you switch profiles in the sidebar the way you switch tabs.
One window, many profiles
When a profile opens, its browser takes the main area: its own tab strip, address bar and pages. Open another and the first keeps running in the background. Click a running profile in the sidebar to bring it forward; the stop button beside it closes it.
- The toolbar shows the open profile’s avatar and name, and under it the connection it uses — or Direct Connection.
- A warning sign beside the name means the last check of that connection failed.
- Close in the toolbar closes the profile; Profile Settings opens its panel without leaving the page.
- A folder that is collapsed in the sidebar shows a green dot while a profile inside it is running.

What works as in Chrome
The profile’s browser is Chromium, so the things you know are where you expect them: tabs, bookmarks, history, downloads, the password manager, DevTools and keyboard shortcuts. Extensions are installed from the Chrome Web Store.
All of it belongs to the one profile. An extension installed in one profile is not in another; a bookmark, a saved password and a cookie stay with the profile they were made in.
What is different
A profile lives in the Liminal window and nowhere else, so the commands that would take it out of there are off:
| In Chrome | In a Liminal profile |
|---|---|
| New window | Not available — open another profile, or a tab. |
| New Incognito window | Not available. A profile is already isolated; for a throwaway session create a profile and delete it. |
| Dragging a tab out into its own window | Not available. |
| A link or a site that opens a new window | Opens as a tab of the same profile. |
| Opening a site as an app in its own window | Not available. |
| Close window | Closes the profile. |
| Full screen | Makes the whole Liminal window full-screen. |
| DevTools | Open docked to the page; they cannot be undocked into a window. |
| Task Manager, Cast, Picture-in-Picture | Not available. |
Tabs between sessions
What a profile opens with is set in Profile Settings › Startup: Reopen Last Session brings back the tabs it was closed with, and Pages to Open adds the addresses you list. Both can be on.
Tip. Quitting Liminal closes the running profiles. Turn on Confirm before quitting in Settings › General if you sometimes quit by accident: the app then asks, but only while profiles are running.
Where the profile’s data is
Browsing history, saved passwords, open tabs, site data and extensions are kept on this computer and are not synced — not on the paid plans either. Cloud sync carries the catalog: that a profile exists, how it is set up and which connection and account it uses. See Where your data lives.
